This time of year makes me want to work in my yard. Planting, fixing, painting, growing. And, of course, SHOPPING!!! The Canadian Tire flyer and other forms of media beckon me to spend a wad on seedlings, hanging baskets, bark mulch, and those lovely gazebos. Earlier this year I already had a plan to extend the patio, rearrange the "poop" area for the dogs, and build a pathway as well as strip & re-stain the deck. What's a non-spending girl to do?! No flowers this year?! No hanging baskets?! It just won't feel like summer :-(
Well, I found a potential solution to my landscaping woes. Freecycle and Kijiji Free Stuff!!! I've been scouring these ads and it looks like I may find some answers here. I'm planning to pick up a little bush with yellow flowers tonight and I know just the place to put it. I've also seen ads for concrete blocks, bricks, gravel, sand, landscape fabric, marigold seeds, and other goodies all for free. Well, I WILL have to spend the gas to go pick these up but I think I will make that exception and go for it.
My yard might not look exactly how I usually do it, but the change might be good for me. And, I'm learning that lifelong valuable lesson.... God will provide what He sees fit in His timing.
So, I can rest easy knowing that my yard will still host family gatherings, bbq's, and evenings around the firepit WITHOUT me having to break my spending fast.

I have a wonderfully frugal friend, who also loves to garden. When she sees an empty lot that is being re-zoned for something, she happily harvests what she wants before the construction crew arrive to level it all. Happy Hunting!
