The Shack
Looks like this blog is really only an infrequent place for me to vent my greatest frustrations!! LOL
I received this book "The Shack" for Christmas this year. My husband read it right way and I just finished it this morning.
I don't think anyone really cares what my opinion is on the book, but just in case someone asks I'll post a few of my thoughts here and then a link to a review that I agree whole-heartedly with (except the reviewer's perspective on Forgiveness.... I don't think he's biblically backed on his view).
As I read the book, I had a sense of sadness come over me that so many Christians are embracing this work of fiction. There is so much errant teaching that is contrary to God's Word. I think Christ-followers would do well to spend more time reading and studying the Word of God instead of filling their minds with fiction, Oprah, and sitcoms!!! If we spent more time learning truth we would recognize the lies. There were many times throughout this book that I literally rolled my eyes and was amazed that Christians are gaga over this kind of worldly, philosophical thinking!! Where's the discernment of my fellow sojourners?
Please, if you feel you need to read this book make sure you ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom and discernment before you read. Then, be a Berean and compare Young's doctrine to the Word of God.
Now, here's the link to a review by a guy named Tim Challies. I have no idea who he is and I've never read any other reviews from him, but I feel that he puts my thoughts on "The Shack" into a very readable article. Of course, I have a few more I'd add, but it's a good place to start :-) The responses to his review make for an interesting read in and of themselves. I found response #71 particularly interesting... she says the concepts in the book are very closely linked to Eastern Religion concepts and doctrine. Hmmmm.... I haven't personally studied any eastern religions but she has some interesting comments about it.
I suppose anytime an event, a book, a movie, or circumstance moves someone to know more about God and inspires them into a deeper relationship with Jesus, it can't be ALL bad. If "The Shack" has done that for you, then I encourage you to use that new-found enthusiasm and dive into the "deep end" .... pick up a good solid Bible study and get ready to REALLY know the Truth that can set you free, indeed!!!!! If you want ideas on where to start, send me an email and I'd be happy to share some of the authors and studies that have really taught me God's Word.
Acts 17:11
Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

Lisa, I fianlly got around to reading your review. I checked out the link you provided and I agree with him and you. I enjoyed reading The Shack, but I don't agree with the theologies behind the story. I argree with you on forgiveness. There is a thread on the review website about that. Thanks for your discernment.
Hi Lisa,
I don't know you, but found your blog through a mutual friend, Elise...just wanted to say that it's encouraging to find other Christians who are having problems with stuff like 'the Shack', it's all the rage here right now. You may be interested to visit my aunt's website www.morebooksandthings.blogspot.com
She's done tons of research on the emergent church, contemplative spirituality etc...
Good luck with your weight loss...I'm endeavouring to do the same!
